Ok Oppo, here we go. Our favorite activity (besides driving, CL, Internet commenting, day dreaming, eating, sleeping, drinking, binging in general, pretending to know what we’re talking about, etc): telling random people what they should buy with their money.
Here’s the overview:
Coworker has a Civic that she admits is still good and can be run into the ground. She, however, wants to upgrade to something more comfortable given her commute. Preference is awd (still acknowledges snow tire benefits). Location is the north of Boston. Looking at new to lightly (3 years old) used with a cap of $25k (may wiggle more for the perfect find). Automatic. Sedan or SUV body style, mid-size preferred.
Wants - heated leather seats, sunroof, power adjusted seats...no real care for tech.
Ranked most important to least important - POWER, comfort, ground clearance, tech, efficiency. In our discussions, comfort has been the most common consideration as her drive is about an hour each way. Input on reliability/maintenance/experiences is appreciated.
Recommended the Legacy but I have been hung up on an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . What are your thoughts?

Ha! I was going the same route, but going to suggest any GM product.

I always suggest a Prius. Always.

Also north of Boston, I just helped a friend pick out a Mazda CX-5 and he’s loving it. He had a Murano previously. Decent milage, AWD, creature comforts etc. all available. It’s really decent to drive, peppy and fun, and it handles good on wet and dry roads. Price is in the right ballpark too.

Honest advice? Keep the damn Civic if they have no idea what they want and are just looking to replace a commuter with another commuter. Heated seats aren’t worth 15k (running under the assumption it’s a newer Civic that has some resale value).
I know I wouldn’t follow my own advice but shifting from one reliable commuter to another for a handful of creature comforts just seems wrong.

Any FCA product fits that bill

That was on the short-list of vehicles I’ve recommended so far. Solid.

It was bound to happen...

Track down a 2016 Kia Sorento 3.3L
If she doesn’t mind going older, 2011-2013 Grand Cherokees are phenomenal. I do about 800 miles a week on mine.

Mitsubishi Outlander? My guess is that with the brand struggling you might get a good deal on one.
Here
I found a 2016 one with leather, heated seats, awd and a sunroof for just under $25k.

Subaru is almost always the answer.

Those S60s are a great pick
Definitely have the power. And some of the most comfortable seats in the industry. All the toys she wants too.
With that budget look for a CPO model. 7 year 100k mile warranty
The T5 is a great engine, and it’ll still run perfectly on regular!

Ecoboost Flex

Oh God, this the summary of so many enthusiast forums, from the “can do it in the driveway with an impact wrench and tools everyone already owns” the “wrong wheel drive “. Classic.

I love the Flex but I imagine too large for her and her needs. She’s also leaning away from domestic.
Again, love the Flex.

Nissan Juke. Probably ticks all of her criteria off. She just has to deal with the Nissan CVT if she wants AWD.
In leieu of that, maybe a Jeep Renegade?
![]() 12/20/2016 at 14:33 |
|
If he/she can sacrifice the AWD. A chevy cruz can be had with heated REAR seats plus all the fancy tech for cheap (2016 MY) Forgot the price exactly, but I went to check one out and it’s a steal tech and comfort wise.
Counterpoint. As someone else posted, they blow piston rings at below 20k miles. Warranty though!

Slightly used 2nd Generation Cadillac CTS4. It has all of her wants.

I’m not even joking.

AWD Hellcat
![]() 12/20/2016 at 14:56 |
|
AWD is the key for her, though.
![]() 12/20/2016 at 14:57 |

If there was a Hellcat for $25k I’d be getting it.
![]() 12/20/2016 at 14:58 |

I thought of the Cruze but a couple friends had tried and was unimpressed. She also recently expressed a desire for non-domestic vehicles.
![]() 12/20/2016 at 14:59 |

You said there was wiggle room for a perfect find. Does it get anymore perfect than an AWD Hellcat? I submit that it does not.
![]() 12/20/2016 at 14:59 |

Solid. Didn’t think of it.
Just learned that she’s leaning non-domestic but it’s going in the domestic pile for sure.

Someone here has a Renegade and actually has grown to hate it so she’s not feeling that. Was a suggestion, though.
Forgot about the Juke. That may suit her well to at least look at!
![]() 12/20/2016 at 15:00 |

Forgot about the Outlander, to be honest.
Well, lots of people have...
Solid, though.

She’s sick of it. She acknowledges it works and she has that luxury but is just tired of it.
If you’ll be spending a couple hours a day driving something I am in agreement that it should be something you like. And though she listed a couple things she would like, she actually doesn’t seem to be interested in the tech goodies you see on the market now. She’s not looking to trade because of comforts but because the Civic doesn’t do it for her over that commute anymore.

I drive a 2008 RWD with the better 3.6 engine. I can attest that it’s got the get up and go that would appease the vast majority of people.

2015 Ford Flex AWD SEL.
Or the Subaru Legacy/Outback 32 mpg , AWD goodness.
Or teach her how to stick shift... WRX limited . And I don’t want to hear the “traffic no stick happy” stuff. I did NYC area traffic for 5 years very happily with a stick.

I’d say allroad. If shes ok with a sedan or an SUV its right in the middle. it has decent power and all the comfort and toys you could want. its a beast in the snow. Then she gets fired for never showing up for work because she only gets halfway there. Allroad piece of shit. (can you tell i’m still bitter?)

I think they’re very underwhelming. However I do like the hatchback one.

Tell her to go drive a GTI, sure no AWD, but you dont really need AWD. I live in the rocky mountains and my GTI rocks the snow...

G37 sedan. Understated, luxurious, powerful, great AWD system. 2013 models fall within the budget. I even spotted some Q50's at the upper limit.
Or if she wants to be sitting a bit higher up opt for the EX37.
